We Are Wrong

Yesterday I read an article in Parade that listed the current Top 10 Worst Dictators in the World. Read it here. I had only ever heard of three of them before I read it: Kim Jong Ill (North Korea), King Abdulla (Saudi Arabia), and Hu Jintao (China). It may surprise you that Kim Jong Ill is not the number one bad guy; it's Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. Why? Read the article to find out. If you don't read it, just trust me. I'd like to throw a rock at that guy.Anyway, after reading and considering the contents of that article, I concluded that we, as Americans, are wrong about our country. I submit that the United States of America is not, in fact, the Best Country in the World. It is a good country - great even, but not the best.

I believe the title of Best should go to a country that is not hypocritical.

In my opinion, the Best Country in the World should maintain the following traits:

1. Freedom (political, religious, racial, etc.)

2. Equality (racial, gender related, etc.)

3. Democracy

4. Benevolence

5. Capitalism

6. Diplomacy

7. Peace (maintaining and promoting)

8. Strength

9. Honesty

10. Consistency

The United States maintains many of these, but not all. I believe the United States lacks consistency, which is why I started thinking about all of this to begin with. For example, if we go after Saddam Hussein because he is clearly a bad guy, then we should also go after Robert Mugabe and the rest of the top 10 list, and when we catch all of them, we should go on to the top 100 bad guys until they are all gone. But we do not go after them. Why? For many complex reasons, I imagine, not the least of which being the fact that we clearly do not give a shit about them because they have nothing we want. If we take out Mugabe, what do we stand to gain? Rubber trees? Who cares. All he is doing is killing and raping black people in Africa, which brings me to my next point:

The world, as a whole, does not care about black people.

Africa is the second largest, and second most populous continent in the world with over 1 billion people living (or dying) there. Sub-Saharan Africa (where the black people are) is the most diseased, oppressed, poorest, and least developed area in the entire world. Its astounding, shocking, and horrifying how little we care about these facts; how little the entire world cares about these facts.

If we are going to ignore something we are going to ignore it in full knowledge of its truth.

I don't really know what to do with this, and I am not suggesting we all move to Africa and treat sicknesses. I just want everyone to agree with me. If the United States was the best country in the world it would take better care of the weakest in our great human race, not the strongest.

Of course, every new President has some ability to make steps toward progress and away from hypocrisy, and maybe Obama will, since he is half African and all; or maybe just because he is a decent human being who could make a change for the better.

In the meantime, we are gunning people down in Iraq and Afghanistan and who knows where else. I thought we were the good guys?

I honestly don't care about Osama Bin Laden anymore, he has done way less than the very best guys on this top 10 list. Kim Jong Ill tortures up to three generations of families for one persons crime. King Abdulla permits executions of juveniles who commit misdemeanors. Robert Mugabe uses rape as a political intimidation tactic, and he has been in power longer than I have been alive.

Fuck you, top 10 guys.

If I ever see any of you, I am going to kick you in the shins and then run away laughing.
